BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is a National park near Montrose,
Colorado. Fifty miles long, it is an amazing geological site.
The Gunnison river flows through it and eventually empties into the Blue
Mesa Reservoir. Two drives are along the two rims (North and South).
We took the North rim drive, the more popular and easy to get to of the
two drives. There are numerous places to stop along the way, some
with small trails.
The north side of the canyon is very steep, and the south side is more
eroded. At the bottom of the canyon, the narrowest point is about
the width of a house. Hiking to the bottom is arduous (we're told),
and requires a permit.
